I've split this part of the website into two sections: 1.Buying Prints Onlineand 2. Technical Questions. Please read this section before ordering prints online. It includes questions on delivery times, returns, framing, canvases, paying by cheque and more. How long will it take for a print to be delivered? Prints will be sent out via first class recorded delivery within ten days of an order being placed. Your picture will need to be signed for when it arrives. If I’m away on a long photoshoot, which is rare, I won’t be in a position to send out pictures for a few weeks. In this unlikely scenario you’ll be offered a full refund. I need the picture as a gift in a hurry. Can you help? If you’re in a hurry it may be possible to speed the process up: call me on 07957 473 693 before placing your order. What if I decide I don’t like a picture when it arrives? I’ll be more disappointed than you. You can return the picture within two weeks and I’ll refund the cost of the print but not of the post and packaging. You’ll also need to pay for the return postage. Please contact me either by phone or email before returning the picture.
Are you still printing your photos on canvas? No. Do you sign your photographs? Yes. I sign every print lightly in pencil on the front, and on the reverse.
Is it safe to pay online with Paypal? Yes, very safe. Much safer than using your card in a restaurant. Your card details go to the bank and are not seen by me. Will you send out framed prints? No. I’m afraid posting out glass feels like asking for problems.
Can I order a print at a different size than available on the website, say 20cm by 30 cm, or perhaps 150 cm long? No. I spend a lot of time getting my prints to look right. Changing the size changes everything. I’ll only print them at a size that I feel works. Sorry. Will you ship abroad? Yes. But I’ll need to estimate the delivery charge. It shouldn’t be too much, but please email me before placing your order. Can I send you a cheque instead of using Paypal? Yes, but be sure to put a note in with the cheque including a phone number along with your details and the name of the print you'd like. Don't forget to add the P&P cost. Make the cheque to "Neil Williams" and post to Neil Williams, The Stables, 41 College Rd, Dulwich, London SE20 7BA.
2. Technical Questions: This includes information on papers, inks, print life, canvas, camera and more. How do you print your photographs? I now print all my photographs digitally on a huge second hand Epson 9600 inkjet printer. What paper do you print your photographs on and will they fade? A problem with inkjet print has been, that whilst potentially beautiful, they've been liable to quickly fade and change colour. My prints won't. I use Epson's Ultrachrome pigmented inks on an O.B.A. free 100% cotton rag fine art paper (O.B.A.s make prints whiter and brighter at first, but quickly yellow, and are wrongly used in most so called "art papers".). When dry, I then coat my prints with a U.V. light resistant spray, which also helps prevent damage from ozone, humidity and pollution. Finally, the photographs are presented in acid free conservation mount-board. I believe this to be the best combination of inks and paper available today. Independent research (carried out by a company called the Wilhelm Imaging Research Institute) suggests that my prints will look the same in 130 years time. However there are reasons to be sceptical of such longevity claims, and it's best not to leave any artwork exposed to direct sunlight for long periods.
Should I go digital? Yes. I went digital in 2004. It was one of the best things I ever did. Don’t believe the Luddites What Camera should I buy? It’s so hard to keep up with what’s out there, and so much available for different budgets that it’s impossible for me to keep up. There are lots of magazines which regularly review them all. But I would recommend spending a bit of money on a good sturdy tripod if you’ll be working outdoors. What Camera do you use? I’ve just recently stepped up from the Canon Eos 5d to the frighteningly expensive 1d mark3. Time to get serious! But honestly, the most important and most difficult thing remains being in the right place at the right time, not the kit. Are your photographs copyrighted ? Yes! It is both illegal and not very nice to either print my pictures off the web site or to use them on your website, for advertising, or anything. Sorry, but it's stealing.
